Consortium of Open Source Developers Finalize New Future for Metadot Portal Server: MetaPoint CMS
Portland, Oregon, USA – May 31, 2009 – The MetaPoint CMS Group (http://www.metapointcms.com), recently completed work on the the next step forward in the future of the renamed Metadot Portal Server product, releasing the MetaPoint CMS 7.0 application.
Available on the MetaPoint CMS website for free download and use, MetaPoint CMS has undergone intensive modifications to it's architecture without losing either the familiar and easy User Interface nor the compatibility with earlier versions of the product. The primary objectives were to understand the major modules, simplify the inheritance structure and provide a method to add custom gizmos. All of these goals were achieved and a broad understanding of the code base established.
Formed in the Fall of 2008, the MetaPoint CMS Group came together due to the lack of innovation and development on the LAMP version of the Metadot Portal Server. The Metadot Corporation, original developers of the product, had abandoned the popular Intranet/Extranet Web Portal software in favor of an incompatible model. The consortium was formed as an Open Source team whose primary mission is to continue development and provide services to interested parties.
Some users of the former Metadot Portal Server include the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dance UK, STRI High Voltage laboratory, The Senior Project Network, and many others.
The work accomplished on the next level of the Metadot product include new gizmos allowing you to do more with MetaPoint CMS than in the past. The new features include a Blog gizmo, sharing videos from Youtube, Pictures from Flickr, import RSS feeds, and a simple page counter, requested for so long on the older platform. These join over 30 other tools included out of the box with the MetaPoint CMS web collaboration system.
The MetaPoint CMS development team has outlined an aggressive road map to bring the product forward from here including inline editing of skins, remove all html from within internal code, modify templates to utilize modern CSS formatting rather than table based positioning, increase the value of existing internal process by including social networking type interaction within user controlled gizmos, such as friends, groups, news feeds, etc. Create user access controls on gizmos and allow individual skins selection on sub-pages. Other planned modifications are available on the community pages under the developer road map within the MetaPoint CMS website.
Currently the Perl based development team is seeking qualified developers to continue the work and increase development speed on the next release. Our call goes out to those interested in promoting the open source ideal and helping to develop one of the best candidates for moving Intranet/Extranet software into a more collaborative web 2.0 type application. Those interested in helping to make history with the MetaPoint CMS should visit our website where they have the chance to apply to join the MetaPoint CMS development team.
